How to undergo a colorectal cancer screening test?

Are you a citizen of the Czech Republic over 50 and have you decided to undergo preventive screening examination? Are you concerned about colorectal cancer and don't want to take any unnecessary risks?

Visit your gynecologist or general practitioner, who will, after a personal consultation:

  1. prescribe a free fecal occult blood test (FOBT) (once every two years from the age of 50)
  2. write a referral for a screening colonoscopy (once every 10 years); the choice of a specific screening centre is entirely up to you, and you can use a map or list of accredited centers. If the results of the screening colonoscopy are normal, you can rest assured for the next ten years and do not need to undergo any further examinations aimed at preventing colon and rectal cancer.

Please note!

If you find traces of blood in your stool that are visible to the naked eye, or if you have any other concerns about colorectal cancer, do not hesitate to see your doctor immediately.

Who is eligible for free colorectal cancer screening test?

In the Czech Republic, men and women aged 50 and over are entitled to screening tests covered by public health insurance: they are entitled to a fecal occult blood test once every two years OR a screening colonoscopy once every 10 years.
