For health professionals

The legislative framework for the colorectal cancer screening program is set out in Decree No. 70/2012 Coll. of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic (MZD CR), on Preventive Examinations. The system for managing this screening programme, conducting screening itself, principles for performing and reporting examinations, and evaluating workplaces and the entire screening programme in the Czech Republic is set out in the Recommended Standard for the Provision and Reporting of Services within Colorectal Cancer Screening in the Czech Republic, published in the MZD ČR Bulletin No. 16/2024. All legislative and other documents related to colorectal cancer screening are available in the Legislation section (available in Czech language only).

Colorectal cancer screening is part of the European Union (EU) Council Recommendation of 2 December 2003 on cancer screening. The EU Council recommends collecting data on preventive examinations, subsequent diagnostic procedures and final diagnoses. Based on these data, the screening process should be monitored and the results should be made available to professionals and the general public. Detailed recommendations for the implementation of screening programmes in individual countries are provided in the European guidelines for quality assurance in colorectal cancer screening and diagnosis, published in 2010. The data collection set up by the Recommended Standard of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic is in line with the EU Council Recommendation and allows monitoring of the programme in a manner compatible with the European guidelines.

The programme is currently carried out in dozens of accredited screening centres, whose activities are continuously monitored and controlled by regional coordinators. In the Czech Republic, compliance with the rules and scientific development of the programme is guaranteed by the Colorectal Cancer Screening Committee of MZD CR (the link leads to an external website, its content is available in Czech language only).
